It uses electrical charges to fire the shells, which use conventional explosives to fire, the idea is to remove the firing pin mechanism which gives you better control. The gun can fire at 1,000,000 rounds per minute, but of course it can't carry that many shells. It is capable of firing in patterns because of the precise way that the shells can be activated. The gun will need cleaning eventually as there will be some tiny amount of residue from the propellant, but there's no chance of a jam like a regular rifle/cannon from the firing mechanism. At least that's the field gun version, the one on the robot I guess does the 240,000 spm, though it doesn't look like it can carry much ammo. Does look like the granddaddy terminators from Terminator 3 ;])
