My spending limit is like 500 bucks.. but preferably less, second hand versions is also a option.

So what are my options, what are the better models etc?
I also know little to nothing about the professional camera's so what are the advantages about such a reflex (mirror reflex?) camera and what are the down sides (in comparison to my Digital Ixus, and please keep it in english, if you tell me that it has a shutter of 30 seconds or something I will not know what that actually means for my picture taking).

Thanks in advance.
I bought the Nikon D40. It was between that and the Canon Rebel XT. When I picked up the Canon it felt cheap and flimsy. Plastic garbage. I'm sure it's fine, but I couldn't get over that cheap feeling. If you have the money (which you say you don't) go for something more high end. If I could afford it I would go for the Nikon D200 or the D2Xs

Just remember this: When you get into this caliber of camera the lenses make more of a difference than the number of megapixels. Lenses are everything (at least to me). The D40 came with an 18-55mm and it doesn't take nearly as nice pictures as the 55-200mm that I bought.
