I think the XTi is actually built a little more solid. At least it felt that way in the store. I thought about getting it, but then the price tag of the XT and the D40 made more sense at the time. If I knew then what I knew now, I'd have spent upwards of $1500CDN (these days that's closer to the American dollar). I think I would've enjoyed the features that some of the more expensive cameras offer.

EOS-1D... I'm also drooling. I'd eat off of a homeless person's ass for one.
