Says who?
Myself, born and lived my early years in southern VA, near the NC border, so although not (for example) central Mississippi towns were spread out, very small, and almost nobody living there commuted to anywhere other than the "store", a field, mill, mine, pressing house, etc. Surviving living hand to mouth on a farm, orchard, or whatever there is tricky...it takes smarts, and granted there's a good case for leaving, which many people have.
"Percentage"-wise in that sort of place, one either survives by making the right decisions, year after year, or they're forced out. How many people can live in/around a large city -- a *real* city like NYC -- and do nothing of value, or just make continuous, dumb mistakes over and over again? I'd wager it's a big number, actually. For folks on their way up, healthy, clever, whatever you want to call them it must be a place of infinite possibilities, but plenty of city dwellers don't' fit that description.
Does bad weather, betting on crops, and miles between neighbors make folks conservative and narrow minded? Yeah, sure. Do they fuck a little too close to home? Obviously. That said, have *most* folks born in the rural US over the last 40yrs chosen to leave when they grow up because this is so limiting in ways? Well...yeah. So...where are all these stupid people now, and how stupid were they to begin with? Dunno, but I think the "dumbness" isn't so easy to pin down.
EDIT: Yeah, I can hear it now...all the smart ones left, or the dumb country folk are the ones sucking up welfare in the cities, once they got there. Or...not.

I don't take your suggestion as insult, if that's a concern.
