Comfort zone.

People love it.
Confronting people takes courage. And you can't have courage without conflict. I think people are just afraid of other's reaction to their opinion. But hey, if they get to have their personal space and free frivolousness ways, then you should as well.
So, doesn't matter if you have to see them every day glare or be distant, at least, you would've earned their respect and now, they know that its a little harder to mess with you.

Comfort zone widened.
