Sure Fallout 3 melds both RPG and FPS, but COD is the quintessential shooter for the 360 hands down. If you are into online play then COD 4 is your game. It has the best leveling system in any online game for the 360. Anyways, forget Fable 2, Gears, and all that stuff... my suggestions on your preferences are COD 4/5 or Fallout 3.
The single player of cod 4 is amazing, Multiplayer is awesome if you can deal with some learning curve growing pains.

I love the bonus mission at the end of the credits, ACES!!!

My only complaint on COD4 is the harder difficulties. Some parts test patience and random luck instead of skill. IMO that is poor game design.

EDIT: I wouldn't assume COD5 is better, unless your a WW2 nut or a CO-OP fan. Also don't neglect your Xbox live memberships selection of demos. Try Civilization, Left 4 Dead, NHL09, Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, Bioshock, Burnout Paradise, Army of Two, Crackdown, FIFA 09, Tiger woods 09, Banjo and kazoie nuts and bolts, Viva pinata2.

Xbox live Arcade demos: Geometry wars 2, Braid, Castle Crashers, Bionic Comando, Mega Man 9, Portal, Puzzle Quest (best on NIN DS), N+, Worms, Assault hero's, Poker, Uno, Pac -man CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION (the other pacman sucks). All Arcade games have demo's. The arcade games appeal to 4 player party gamers, and casual gamers BIG TIME and don't really exclude or insult serious gamers either.
