This isn't meant to be preachy or to tell anyone what to do. I'm just telling you what I've experienced.

I lived thirty years with an active alcoholic, who is now 20+ months into recovery. A couple basic things I now realize: (1) you are powerless to force someone to stop drinking. The harder you try, the sicker you make yourself. (1a.) you can't tell an alcoholic what to do. (1b.) an alcoholic only quits when he's ready to quit.

For, literally, thirty years, I did all the classic things to get my loved one to stop: pouring drinks down the sink, taking keys, locking her in, screaming at her, etc. etc. All it did was make me whacked. When she got sober, it was because she was ready. Not a single thing I did in thirty freakin' years had anything to do with her getting sober.

Just sayin'
