There are probably cool gay people in Hollywood, but because they don't make a big deal about the fact that they are gay, we don't notice them the way we notice the idiots.

We, society, still make a big deal out of celebrities being gay. And the media go along with it and reinforce it. So the celebrity in question can either go with the flow and play it up, or stick his/her head in the sand.
As you correctly say, "we don't notice them" if they don't play it up. But if you are a celebrity, it is part of your job description to get noticed as much as possible. So if the media are going to give you free publicity just for playing up your gayness in public, why not? It's just another tool for a media whore.
