Since it affects Apple apps as well, such as Safari, I am not quick to blame the developer since it seems to be any app. Not sure if other 3GS users are having similar problems.
So I can't be certain that the lock is an issue in the KATG app code, or with the OS.

The wifi to 3G thing has always been an issue, I've got some reconnection stuff on the back burner because poking around with that bit of the app is a gigantic timesink/living hell.
As far as your freezes it often helps to do a restore and set up as new phone to clear out any screwy settings.
