There are probably cool gay people in Hollywood, but because they don't make a big deal about the fact that they are gay, we don't notice them the way we notice the idiots.

This is a very good point and I forgot about guys like Sir Ian McKellan and Stephan Fry who are open and out but don't make big deal about it. I am sure there are other as well, again, I can't think of any now but also, with those guys being british, it might be the good ole british reserve kicking in, in that they don't feel the need speak of their private lives all the time.
Also - they are older, who wants to know, you know what I mean!?
On the other hand, you can't blame some of these celebrities cause they are trying to keep careers going and with homophobia being the way it is in America, coming out is something that is important in the continued fight to say that fucking whoever you want to fuck is actually ok!
