At no point do I excuse Polanski's actions. He did a very bad thing and should be punished for it. But it seems overly simplistic and unproductive to take away his achievement as an artist.

Point me to one place where I said this should happen. At no point do I advocate Polanski's freedom or say he should not be punished. I just ask that one consider the art separately from the artist.

There's quite a difference between rape and bad checks. And keith did his time, Roman's been avoiding his crime for years.
No. I didn't say that. I'm saying that he should not be forgiven for his crime, nor should any of these other people you speak of. If they did create art (and I wouldn't say either of them did, though Oswald might have an argument) I would view and judge it separately from my opinion on either of them (which, again, isn't changed by the fact that they potentially created art). And of course writing bad checks is less drastic than rape. That's the point of me using it. Start with something you know and go from there. Anyways, wouldn't Keith's black-or-white philosophy make them equally bad? You know what he says, "even something as little as littering... dead."
