I did manage to finish FFXIII, and so did my girlfriend. It was both our first JRPG (aww, how cute, eh?).
Man, sometimes I thought the grind would never end! But then it did and I was treated to some nice cinematics and story. So, if you're about 7 hours in and aren't drawn to the story thus far I'd say either take a break from it for a while or just forget about it altogether and get rid of it. Both my gf and I liked the story... a shit-ton of people fucking hated it though. The consensus is that the story picks up in the middle (about 15-20 hours into it haha), keeps a good high and then kinda fizzles out at the end.
Don't keep playing if you're not in it for the long haul. The game is very linear to a point, so I can guarantee you've got another 30-35 hours minimum to get to the end. Just keep that in mind.
And like madeye said, there are a bunch of other great games out right now. Maybe trade it in for some Red Dead Redemption? RDR doesn't disappoint!
