These books have become classics, not because as Keith says there were no other books around then, but because the themes and stories they describe continue to be repeated today. Honestly, I think that because we are so inundated with themes from classic literature that many people are incapable of appreciating the original sources.

And those same storeies were told before in antiquity. Even the classics are re-hashes. And most of em still suck. Originality ended as soon as people started writing things down.
