It would probably be a pain for bugs, but you could get some extension tubes for around $150. I've only used mine on inanimate objects, since you have about a millimeter of focus, and the lens has to be nearly pressed against your subject.

I know at least one person here has used a coupler to attach 2 lenses together. I've never tried this, but it's another way to get macro shots.
