Kobayashi didn't sign the contract because it's the pod-show of competitive eating. It doesn't prohibit participation in "a few places", it's all the other major sanctioned events.
Also, Chestnut won $10,000 for his first place. Kobayashi was paid $15,000 for his crash. Yeah, he won.
