In Scotland and Northern Ireland banks can issue their own bank notes. In England and Wales the Bank of England can only issue bank notes. The currency is all Sterling and face values are the same regardless of issuer. A lot of shops in England won't take the other issuers even though it is legal tender.
It is called Axe everywhere else in Europe except the British Isles due to trademarks.
