My friends wanted me to go watch The Hunger Games with them and I thought it was really enjoyable.

The convenient nature of all the ways of how the protagonist escaped danger may have been sloppy writing. However I think they made it clear that winning the competition involved a lot of blind luck, which I think was probably why things were presented in the way they were.

Plus, about the extravagant cakes; The kids didn't eat them when they got on the train and they didn't even seem slightly interested in them. I think the elaborate presentation of food was more to show how out of touch the ruling elites were with the people they were oppressing. The tone and purpose was very different than Harry Potter.
