Almost every metal artist says that the Satanism stuff is about anti-Christianism and freedom of thought rather than any actual deity, or is a stage show.
Metal has reverence for independence, free thought, comradery, and our shared past, which is just about entirely at odds with Christianity. Hence the Satanism.
