oof. so. i am hard on a book. but, for my own posterity. i don't read books a great deal and never for leisure. every item in my small collection is an idea i felt worth exploring or a memory kept close to my skin; few fiction, mostly reference and collections of essays. a good many are dog-eared and several heavily littered with notes in the margin. they are my journals; triggers for stuff i keep deeply tucked away. the broken spines are mostly from reading in trees; safety, though.

if one of my books ends up in the hands of progeny, it's because i want someone to know me. i want to leave tangible first hand sources of our time; an echo of the past. of myself. the stuff i do for the public isn't the only legacy i want to leave. these things are more intimate; personal. real.

i will say, my signed first edition of The Great American Novel is kept in fine condition.
