Can we focus a little?
Turnstile kid only got a ticket. Not-paying-an-old-ticket kid got arrested. Should she have gotten arrested for that? I don't think so but not paying a ticket is more serious than jumping a turnstile.
When you make it seem like Chemda got arrested for jumping a turnstile, you're creating a straw-man argument.
Let's bring it back into a focused discussion, so we don't talk past each other.
Should Chemda have gotten a ticket for jumping the turnstile?
I say yes.
On the show, Chemda said police budget for jumping turnstiles should be used to subsidize the MTA. That means no one watching for people jumping the stiles. No tickets for jumping.
I believe the problem with Chemda's plan is the police budget would be a drop in the bucket. I doubt there'd be any real cuts if you put the entire turnstile jumping task force budget into MTA.
Without policing, more people will not pay and cause a deeper budget issue with the MTA.
Further, police presence is good for more than turnstile jumpers. Yes, they are primarily there to catch jumpers but added police presence on the platform is helpful late at night.
What does everyone else think?
Should Chemda have been arrested for not paying an old ticket?
On the show, I was favoring yes because I couldn't think of another solution. Afterwards, I felt that trespassing someone from MTA resources each year until they pay the fine is a better solution.
On the show, Chemda believed she shouldn't have been arrested and felt like it wasn't a good time to discuss alternatives.
@Chemda - What do you think of the trespass idea? Do you have any alternative ideas?
