i think b/c we didn't have a lot of money, to make it fun and exciting, my mother gave me loads of autonomy in making choices about what i put together for school. she's good like that. i remember once or twice a year she'd sit me down with the latest JCPenney catalog and i'd pick out a handful of rompers and half a dozen pair in varying colors and patterns of cotton stretch stirrup pants. i was /all/ about the stirrup pant b/c the smell of new denim gave me anxiety and i refused to wear jeans until middle school. getting my first pair of name brand sneakers was a big effing deal. i didn't mind the mail order, hand me down, and yard sale outfits or the hand made vests (guys, there were /so/ many vests), but goddamnit i was embarrassed of those wal-mart shoes. people notice.
