Once upon a time (like 20 years ago) coal mining jobs and other industrial jobs could support a whole family.

In my hometown a job down at the shipyard is seen as a great gig. Those guys can make $75k+ a year without needing a degree. In Alabama you can support a family, own a huge home in a nice neighborhood and have a stay at home wife for that salary.

Plus it plays into the macho man who is able to support his family while doing a manly job cultural thing.
