I don't think people are literally scared of darkness. They are scared of not being able to see any potential danger.

That's a survival skill. Survival of the fittest means that those who are the most cautious at night live long enough to mate another day. Explaining why so many people have "a fear of the dark". Genetics.

Whether it's logical or not in this day and age is a different story. Technology moves faster than evolution.
