The term seems "funny" because it's been redefined. It was first coined by men who'd leave particularly graphic comments on Instagram. They'd be called out on it and then complain:
"You females just post thirst traps! You purposefully put up a pic of yourself in a bikini, knowing I'd comment in gross, explicit detail how I want to put my dick inside you, just so you could turn around and publicly shame me!"
Mocking them, people began using the term ironically and eventually "thirst trap" evolved from a hostile accusation to a tongue-in-cheek synonym for "fishing for compliments".
