I traveled through Europe and North Africa for ~3 weeks a few years ago, alternating between being by myself and visiting friends who were also traveling/living abroad. I would go at most like 3 or 4 days alone before seeing someone I knew, which helped make the alone time feel special and liberating vs. isolating and depressing. 7 months seems like a loooong ass time to be alone.

Coming back is probably weird, it sounds like he has mixed feelings about the whole thing. I'm guessing he'll come to appreciate the adventure more as time goes on.

I'd recommend Richie try WWOOfing next time he wants a 7 month-long retreat - it's a program that hooks up people looking to travel/live in a different country with farms, they let you stay for free in exchange for working the land. Definitely a cheaper way to GTFO for a long time.
