Also, some people are not comfortable bringing up issues right away, as soon as they happen. They need time to process their feelings and find the right words regarding the situation. Just because she brought it up a few days later (which isn't that long after), it doesn't make it less valid.

He is so much on the side of 'we are all cool and open and chill and I'm basically a scientist isn't that so sophisticated?' that he might not spend enough time to really think about what he is doing.
