People dealt with it by drinking and raging isolating. Or being extremely religious.
It was called having a temper or being nervous.

We have language to describe these things now and it is slightly more socially acceptable to do so. Definitely didn't back then. I was told I was lazy as a kid when it turns out I had depression. Parents continued to tell me I was lazy until I tried to kill myself when I was 13. I wish I had the word depression to describe what I was feeling then. When I tell you it took me years to figure out I had depression and it shouldn't have taken that long...
