Keith, you wanted your brother to empathize with you and be on your side when you're telling stories about other people being assholes? Instead of saying, "but what if they..." and trying to see the other person's side or both sides.
So you do want them to empathize instead of solve problems with you. Or maybe it depends on the situation.
