Pharmaceutical companies could make money just fine with something not taken every day.
The problem is more, you need double blind studies with some endpoint. The person on the trip would know very soon if it was the real thing.
It could be lifting the depression but it's hard to measure because you can't take blood and see how much a person is depressed.
It's very subjective.
