The research doesn't seem to require any robots, it's really about an infrared spectrometer. I guess when you reach the end of two years research into an interesting-and-handy-yet-not-quite-as-scientifically-sexy-and-topical-as-the-robot-the-guys-next-door-made-just-before-they-got-their-big-fuck-off-grant spectrometer it pays to whack it on the end of a cute looking green robot and call the press
