Regarding the men on the train checking out women, a decade ago I heard this great radio piece from a trans female-to-male who talked about the experience. Sadly I cannot find it so I will have to paraphrase.

As a woman in college, she was a lesbian that ran in a hardcore feminist circles: practically anti-man. After college he realized he was trans and went through the whole physical transition to becoming a straight man.

He wasn't expecting the hormones would literally make him check out women. Back in college, she viewed men checking out women as an explicit act of hostility. Now pumping with large doses of male hormones, a woman would pass him on the street and his mind would start freaking the fuck out. He would try to look forward without glancing at the woman. Every second that passed the physical urge would grow stronger, he had the physically fight his eyes from moving. Finally it would be too much, he would turn back to glance and the rush of relief would rush his brain.

I found it to be pretty accurate description of it. It is fucking weird. It is a process of learning how to give precident to the higher orders of the brain tin order to suppress the lizard parts. I'm pretty sure some men don't have bother to control much of their lizard parts of their brains.
