I read the book a few years ago, and it was a boring story about a lazy, and annoying teenager.
Over-rated. |

Atlanta is a very gay friendly city. There is an entire "section" of Atlanta that is devoted to gays, rainbow flags everywhere, gay clubs and bookstores, etc. similar to Christopher Street in NYC or Castro in San Francisco. Atlanta also has a large black population so there is a huge minority base and it is a lot more liberal than cities in other surrounding states (Alabama, the Carolinas, Tennessee). It's not only young gay men but middle aged ones as well. It's where gays who want to live in the south go, not all gays have to live in San Francisco, some like the East Coast and warm weather. I love them because they're flamboyant and fabulous with a southern accent all at once. The pride festival is huge in Atlanta as well. |

After getting thru King's Dark Tower series, I'm convinced he's at least a little crazy. I haven't read that many other books of his, but I can see his writing in most of his movies. Dreamcatcher was a bad movie, but I can see how they had to really sprint thru the plot, picking out just little bits and pieces from the book to show character development. It's got to be hard to fit a 600 page book into a movie, maybe that's why a couple others (like Langoliers) have been TV mini-series, and maybe why King thought he might do a better job directing.
And who can blame Sanchez for "crushing" on Monique. |

I think that 90% of the adaptations of his stuff fail because his books are major on imaginative descriptions and wordplay and in depth character work. The movies either deviate completely from his stuff (Kubrick's Shining) or are almost unwatchable. Frank Darabont seem to be the only one that gets King right, especially in the human side of his stories. |

Gays in Indianapolis
I was surprised to hear Keith say he thought that Indianapolis was one of those gay friendly cities. Sure there are gay people here, but everyone that I've meet for the most part (outside of bloomington that is) keep it under wraps. I mean, Indiana itself is still trying to get over the fact that it was the HUB of KKK activity (all the way up to the governer at one point!) There are towns were blacks are afraid to even DRIVE through because of how bad the racism is...there's no way in hell that gay people are as widely accepted, with the exception of Bloomington, which is a hippie town anyways.

Thanks Keith, for such a ringing endorsement for my words.
But no, in the 1960's we were required to produce at least a 4000 word essay. And they not only counted the number of words we produced, but wrote the total number of words on the top, in Red ink. Not like the children of today, where they could write anything they liked. We could not have just given two lines. As I got an F for my essay, I'm not sure what I would have received for just submitting two lines as you suggested I did. Fortunately for me, I had attended Lutheran Sunday school, as my parents felt I should go to some religious schooling, and was able to produce enough written text, at least on paper, for my argument. Perhaps i should have said I got an F/A, and F for content and an A for the number of words and spelling. But the F is what I got, so that is what I remembered. I did get my father and mother to read the paper before I submitted it. My father, as a Christian Scientist, just wanted me to think. My mother, just wanted me to believe. My father did go to the school and argue that the teacher was stupid, I heard this while sitting outside the principle's office, but it didn't change my grade. I wish I still had the paper, as I would reproduce it here, but sadly, as in the late 1970's my first wife destroyed it, along with most of my writings, while I was based in South Dakota at Ellsworth Air force Base as an Aerospace Munitions Officer. Yes, I signed for the bombs that could have blown up the world on Titan Missiles and the B52 bombers based there. I also looked after the men, and women, who took care of those bombs, along with the munitions that could have taken over any number of cities in the US at that time. Yes, we loaded bombs on air planes that then dropped munitions on that small country Vietnam. Older and wiser, I wish otherwise, but what can you do when you are fed pap? I could have gone into EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) as I had the courses to do so, but I had no desire to be blown up, as were several of my fellow officers who went that route, during their training missions. I live in the UK now, which is why my words are often written in UK spelling, instead of the modified US spellings that have occurred over the past 100 years. If you are going to fit in, you must spell as everyone else does. Keep up the good work, and by all means, trash me again, if that is what you need for the podcast. Both you, and Chemda are brilliant, and I wish I were 20 (or 30) years younger. |

He's also smart enough to adapt the least "out there" stories and pick the ones that are more about the characters. Sure, Coffey was a big black Jesus but that small bit of supernatural business is easy for an audience to accept. The rest of it was all character stuff. |
