I'm still a show or two behind so you may have addressed this but:

On Thursday's show Patrice said that Superbowl Sunday is the busiest day of the year for domestic violence hotlines (or something to that effect). This is a myth mostly perpetuated by liberal "media watchdog" group FAIR in the early '90s.

The myth is based on anecdotal evidence and a single study, of one region for two years, that found a tenuous link between the local team winning and a slight increase in domestic violence metrics. FAIR and other women's advocacy groups allegedly used the myth to pressure NBC into "donating" a free PSA spot during the '93 Superbowl. When they got called on it afterward FAIR denied making the claims and attacked the journalists questioning them as misogynists. In any case many media outlets ran with the original story and that's how the myth was born.

Can you provide a link?

"Myth debunking" is a dangerous territory. Holocaust denbiers have thousands of analysis, pictures and schemes in order to prove that the Shoah is a myth, including studies made by paid scientists on the actual death camps.

Anything can be manipulated or debunked.

While I am glad my book review made the show, I really need to try to edit myself. My own words made me sound like a tard, at least the part about my ex-wife. And I would re-word my description of my marriage. Oh wellz. *sigh*

A study was done after FAIR made up that stuff several years ago. It found that violence on Super Sunday is up over the average. The increase of offenses on that day, however, were "relatively small compared to those reported on holidays such as Christmas or Memorial Day."

Here's a more up to date overview of the issue:

Super Bowl Sunday, Domestic Violence & Your Health | World of Psychology

The article says it was "largely debunked" and points to this study published in 2007 that found no substantial link with increased domestic violence activity. The "largely" qualifier is due to the study RichieGB posted, which found a small link, with the note that that study was not peer reviewed. But any way you look at it, there is no evidence SB Sunday is the worst day of the year for domestic violence and plenty to suggest it isn't.
