To avoid the ambiguities in "common" sense, isn't it just best for everyone to go "hey, no guns. how bad do we need to let kids take toy guns to school anyway" |

No common sense is saying:
"Hey Timmy don't forget we can't have guns in school, even toy ones. Now put that in your pocket and don't bring it to school again. OK?" What purpose does making a big ass deal over a piece of plastic serve? Is this some kind of deterrent? "Wow you hear Jimmy got suspended over a toy gun? I 'll stick to swords and axes thank you very much." These kids are 9 and they are stupid because they are 9 they don't always do the right thing, so you point out the right thing and they go "Oh OK." and move on with life. Obviously if a real weapon comes to school make a shit storm about it so the kids understand but jeez let kids play with toys. Making sure high school kids don't bring air soft guns to school with zero tolerance might make sense but plastic toys and kids should be a-ok anywhere. Christ they sell them in gum ball machines especially for kids. One last thing from me... The school my kid goes to has to follow these bullshit zero tolerance rules from the district but there isn't ONE district rule that calls parents out on kids who do no homework. Why isn't there a zero tolerance rule on not making sure kids do homework? Suspend the kid who didn't do his fraction homework and is forcing the teacher to take time away from all the students re-explaining the shit he would have figured out with his parents last night if he did the homework. Why Not? because you are just creating more problems for the students and the teachers because the kids missing more schoolwork and homework. But somehow creating this new asprin/toy gun problem and kicking kids out of school is solving THAT problem. Sure that makes sense... Last edited by jeffInMadison; 02-11-2010 at 08:12 AM. |

9 year old kid brings GI Joe sized toy gun to school. Mistake, against the rules. How big of a deal does anyone need to make of that?
The school made it a big deal by bringing suspension into it instead of just reminding the kid. The parent made it a big deal by taking it to the press. Stupid all around... Common sense did not prevail. The only one allowed to be stupid is a 9 year old kid. And how do you think a school should deal with a kid who makes a mistake? Zero tolerance says toy gun, suspension, but forgot homework, remember next time kid OK? Which one makes sense? |

What sort of mom calls the news about that shit? That's the most disturbing part of it. We are turning kids into pussies. A teacher tells a kid not to bring the gun to school and calls his parents to let them know and you have to call the local news?
It's not like they were going to kick him out of school but suddenly the media intervened. |

I bet if the parent didn't call the media then there wouldn't have been such and issue, a single isolated infraction if you will. but now that its an issue all the little kids who think they are to bad ass for school are going to push the envelope. mom is an idiot
