White guy and nerd that I am, I'm not sure how much of a statement I can make on race but here's my take:

I live right at the dividing line between Detroit and the suburbs (8 mile, like the movie, etc) and the 99% white police force in the city I live in thinks it's their job to defend the burbs from the darkies who would dare to use our walmarts (OHNO!) and I've been in a car when it got pulled over with me driving and been in a car when a black friend got pulled over and if you've ever been through that then you wouldn't really see nerdism vs racism as a debate.

I know I've never seen the cops shut down a busy street so they could strip a car to nothing right then and there, just to make a very visible point to anybody who thinks they want to venture into the place where white people are trying to pretend they don't exist for a guy with a pocket protector.

Ok doctor, i have a hard time fitting in your cathegories.

I hate star wars, star trek, 99% of fantasy, think D&D is boring, never been to a convention.

I'm good at computer stuff in the sense that i can use it decently, and that at my job i'm one of the "Experts".

I'm not socially awkward or fat.

I love comic books, video games, reading in general, cult movies, comedy, music, all with a level of passion that's borderline insane.

According to some, i'm a geek, to others i'm a nerd.

Since you claim that yours is the ulrimate definition system, where do i fit?

No sarcasm, just curiosity.

lol, then you would be a geek and a nerd, its not one or none, and its not the "ultimate" definition, its just designed to make classification a little easier.

Would you say some nerd who owns a ton of star wars toys and has his own captain kirk outfit the same as the guy who graduated honors and works IT.

Booth probably got picked on in highschool. One did something with his life, the other lives in his mothers basement and JO's to anime.

Geek - Someone who is REALLY into something whether it be some kind of sport, game, t.v. show, or other hobby-ish things. You could be a football-geek or a movie-geek.

Nerd - These are your Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of the world. The guys who can take a computer apart and put it back together by memory. The guys who are in the intellectual side of the ven-diagram. Very good at things like Math or Physics.

And as always there is an overlap and grey area between the two.

Really? Really? This is a debate. Wow. It's great to be Brown! You're all just proving how great it is! (Oh and how wonderful you fucking nerds are)

Being teased sucks. Being economically and socially handicapped because of a historical precedence that rendered an entire group of people uneducated, poor and ignorant. Not so much fun.

My parents were both discriminated against, growing up in NYC. My mom was at the top of her class always, but when she told her guidance counselor she wanted to be a veterinarian, the guidance counselor told her, I shit you not, "That will never happen because of the color of your skin." Essentially she said aim lower.

My parents aren't that old and they don't even hold any animosity toward any race. But I grew up on welfare because even though by the time my mom was able to go to college, she could have been a vet, she didn't believe she could be anything but a secretary.

My dad is illiterate because even though he barely spoke english and was from the Dominican Republic they refused to put him in ESL because he had dark skin and looked Black.

JUST SAYING.
I'm not agreeing with Keith's poll.

USA > Africa though...

USA (A country built on the back of slavery and genocide) > AFRICA (a continent raped and pillaged non stop by the western world that is only just recently starting to break out of the cycle of destruction imposed upon them and only just barely)

Good point.

I guess I'm racist oh wells.

Sticks n Stones. People who's feelings are hurt by a racial slur need to keep that in mind.

You had me up til this. This is just ignorant. Like saying gay people can be 'cured'. Pass is the word you're looking for. Some Nerds can pass. Often those are the nerds who catch the worst flack from their community when found out.

This seems backwards from everything I've known, and also to how Keith seems to define it. Your "con Geek" would be his Nerd. I'm good at Math and can assemble a computer (it's basically a 10-piece lego puzzle), I'm not into cons/star wars/any TV shows, but I'm socially awkward (and no, you can't just "grow out of it"), and I still think I might escape the nerd holocaust.
