I really can't believe the Chemda vote is losing on this one. McDonald's would definitely have you eat every meal of every day happily and oh yeah, bring the whole freaking family.

I think Keith A. and Chemda were arguing around each other. I don't think she ever argued for government intervention to stop McDonald's. In fact, if I remember correctly I believe she thought the San Francisco thing to ban toys from Happy Meals was ridiculous. Her only argument was that advertising is powerful and rather insidious. She didn't even really put a judgment on it beyond that.

I don't know about in the US, they might have these sort of ads but don't here Australia. If McDonalds had an ad (i.e. all in one ad not different ads) that sort of showed one person over the course of a day eating all the meals there, I think Chemda's point would be valid. But as I say (at least in Australia) they don't. They have single ads targeting different foods or foods from different times of the day.

Also, "sugar industry," Keith A? Try corn. As in high fructose corn syrup.

McDonald's is driven purely by profit. That's not good or evil; that's called capitalism. Of course they would like it if people ate all their meals there. Of course their PR department would need to be retarded to say that outright.

"Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for a private profit."

In order for Chemda to be wrong, all of the people making money from McDonald's (from investors to executives) would need to have decided they make enough money. Since a major driver of stock prices is annual growth, this is not likely to happen. How many people don't want more money than they have now? How many of their execs don't want a raise or bonus for the rest of their career? How many people with McDonald's stock would be happy if it stagnates?

New ads break up breakfast, lunch, and dinner into separate ads (plausible deniability) . Found an old one that included all 3 in one ad.

Cigarette companies knew their product was bad for you when they posted this ad. And they still know it causes cancer now, but they do keep trying to sell more and more of them.

Or this one, smoking to protect your throat and keep you from getting fat?
