The theory is that the "snakes" referred to in the St Patrick legend are the Druids, who used serpent imagery. Since he was there to convert all the heathens to Christianity, the idea that he was "banishing" the snakes (polytheists) makes sense.

Chemda says "that doesn't seem very saintly" in this episode; one needs to remember that saints do what Christians consider good, not what is generally positive. Saint Olaf, for example, was canonized because he spread Christianity throughout Norway with war. He showed up in Norway, said, "I'm King of Norway you guys" and then crushed the armies brought against him.

Olaf was the patron saint of the Varangians, who were essentially mercenary Vikings, and he was half-brother of Harald Hardrada, who is famous for invading England with his Viking army and subsequently dying on the field of battle. Olaf was just a warlord, but he was a warlord for God, and that makes him a saint.

In fact, if you're just a good person, you're definitely not going to be a saint. You have to do something for God, whether it's kill a ton of folk or heal 'em, just make sure you told them it was for God.

Oh by the way, Lucas, you're sick dude. Take some fucking pills.

everyone is a skeptic these days though. back in the day if you claimed to be a Christian and did anything worthy of noting, you were doing the works of God.
i wish it were that easy now.
"hey guys, Jesus wants me to fuck all these girls in his name... no really, it's God's will."

Well, the other nasty side of being a saint is you often have to have been martyred, which means dying horribly at the hands of heathens. Better to be sinful and repent on your deathbed. Jesus still has to take you.

If that were actually true the majority of the Western world wouldn't be Christian. Not all tricks will work on gullible people all of the time, but something'll work.

I mean, not only are people Christian, but people still believe in that Pope bullshit. At any point you start thinking people are skeptics, go watch an old man feed the world a shit sandwich and tell them it's delicious. The world's still packed to the gills with dumb people just waiting to give liars a leg up.

people are definitely skeptics. of course they believe all the things they've been fed their whole life, that doesn't make them not skeptics. if i were to proclaim that i was a messenger of God, very few people would follow me. basically all i'm saying is that Mormanism would never work if Joseph Smith was in our time.
there are cult leaders, but no Christian saints canonized for anything other than service to the community. otherwise George W. Bush could be nominated for sainthood for fighting the Muslims. (pahahahaha)

EDIT: you guys should look up the definition of "skeptic"

When 80% of Americans believe in angels, I have to say I agree with Bob on this one. Most people are NOT skeptics. The general public is better educated than they were hundreds of years ago when most of them were peasants working in fields. We have a basic understanding of science and nature, and of course most of us can read which was not the case for much of history. But we are not skeptics.

Trust me, id agree with you if it was that easy but medication for depressions are worse than the illness itself. it IS an illness but the meds do not cure it. they make the symptoms more bearable but it comes back.

Not saying that going on medications is an alternative that must be banned, but one has to be really careful with taht, since a)its not certian that the meds that the doctor prescribes are what you need, since they overprescribe b)most of the times the depression can be faced without them c)the side effects and addiction stay even if you're cured and you cant stop

If i could go back when my own problem started, i'd NEVER take meds.

I like Lucas. He's a good guy, and very matter-of-fact about it. It would make me sad if he killed himself.

Please don't kill yourself, Lucas.
