I feel sorry as well for anyone living with depression in a country where the only available coping mechanism for many is to drink until their livers rot.

The problem with whole depression thing is that people are ignorant towards it. It seems that depression is not taken seriously. In reality this is a very serious matter that ruins many people's lives. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Lets say you hear from someone that had diarrhea. You feel really bad for that person. However, when you hear depression it is perceived as an "emo" problem or some thing of this sort.

Andrel, point taken and welcome to the KATG foray.
Ok...getting all sociologist but if you look at Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, it says that folks' needs change.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Once you have satisfied basic needs of food and shelter, other needs become as important. Like love and belonging, and self esteem. Just because someone has the basic needs of food and shelter met, doesn't mean that the other worries of love and belonging, self esteem and self actualization aren't as important to the individual who is experiencing them at that time.
