I think one thing that is missing from the gay guy voice debate is the fact that it might be used as signifier. Could it be similar to part of the reason some lesbians dress a certain way? If 10% of the world is gay (and that's a high guess), that means only 5% of the population is available to you, romantically.

So if i'm walking down the street, or i meet a bunch of people during the day, or at a club, how do i know which other people are gay and could be romantic interests? Straight people can assume that most of the people they meet are also straight. It's the opposite for gay people. So it makes it easier when you have these signifiers. I know it's definitely a thing with the way some lesbians dress, and maybe it could be a similar thing to why some gay guys speak flamboyantly?

Mmm, I don't think they're doing it to make it known they're lesbians/gay.

well, i don't agree that it's a put on thing, so it would had to have evolved and be a biological trait. I don't know, i was just putting it out there as a theory.

Chemda had it right when she pointed out that we recognize the ones who are more obvious about it but do not even notice the ones who do not fall under our expected stereotypes of what "gay" is. So if you're walking down the street and see Rosie O'Donnell and Portia de Rossi, you're going to assume that you've seen one lesbian. But guess what? You've seen two. Meanwhile there are athletic women who everyone assumes are gay but who aren't.

I saw the roast and the situations bit was brutal. he has no comical timing at all however i don't think it was all his fault, the jokes he was telling were pretty shitty so i think a lot of the failure is the writers fault. I would say about 70% was him being shitty and 30% was shitty material.

Well yeah. That's kind of exactly what i'm saying. I'm gay, but people assume that my girlfriend and i are straight. It happens constantly to her especially, it NEVER crosses their mind that she might be gay. And I have friends who've said that part of the reason they have short hair and do look more stereotypically lesbian is because it's an easy signifier. So when you do see them, you might assume that they are gay. Because otherwise, like with your example, you might ignore someone like Portia because you assume they are straight, if you are out looking for someone to date etc.

Anyway, it's all just theoretical - i know gay people from all walks of life, from all spectrums of masculinity and femininity.
