Octopi are actually extremely intelligent, so much so in fact, that it is suggested that if you keep one as a pet you keep it in a tank with an intricate locking mechanism. Over time the octopus will actually learn how to open its own tank just by watching how you do it. There are also studies that have shown octopi teaching other wild octopi how to open a jar to get to a treat (crab) locked inside, after having learned the skill in a lab. All this is moot, of course, until octopi start to teach each other how to be delicious.
