Warlords have been doing their thing in Africa for longer than any civilization we have today has existed. Their way works. 'Takin out the bad guy to save the day' is too simple a narrative to work in real life, as much as we love it. The entire situation has to change radically for warlords to become a thing of the past. Beyond that point, American consumers are more responsible for the conflicts in Africa than the individuals who happen to fill the obligatory villainous roles their are. That's what we should focus on.

Supporting healthy economic practices can be seen directly helping communities. Military intervention is less clear in how it might help or how it might hurt. We have to be careful with what we support if we want to do our parts.

That's my patched-together stance on the issue anyway.

There is a difference though. Back in times of sticks and clubs, kids weren't very useful in combat, so they could grow up learning useful skills to keep the economy going. Now they can just be armed with firearms and so there's incentive for the warlord to recruit them without giving them time to grow up and learn anything else.
