Percentage wise, I would bet that a larger percent of black Americans are religious in comparison to whites. Which is probably why the group chose to put up the billboard up in a predominantly black community in the first place. It was only after that did the people who came up with the billboard probably think; “Okay a predominantly black, largely religious area… how can we get them to stop and pay attention to our billboard promoting atheism?” So congrats to the atheist group, it worked... sort of. Also most people who were “offended” by the billboard probably didn’t even pay attention to the apology let alone get the billboards overall message.
In general I think the atheist groups are going about this whole thing the wrong way. Instead of pointing out how bullshit religion is, instead they should run a campaign about the benefits of atheism. If you want to look at it from a business or sales stand point, you won’t get anywhere pointing out how shitty your competitor is. If your product is of good quality and satisfies a want or a need then people will buy it. For most people religion scratches an itch that atheism can’t. Its not about truth, very few things are in life are. For the religious its more about having a feeling of comfort and safety. Also, if a man sees a black guy in a hoodie and thinks; “criminal” I’m pretty sure that same man, if he saw a black guy in a suit and tie would think; “I know who just came from a court appearance.” |

Which is why the billboards are a waste of money. Billboards were designed to sell products and not intangibles. However, they are still trying to get people to, for lack of a better term, buy into the idea of atheism, so how do you sell a non-product? I think the idea of putting up billboards to sell a belief is obnoxious and intrusive on both sides. I get the same level of discomfort from both. Besides the driving forces that people build their beliefs around runs way deeper than a need to get McDonald's, or to see the latest movie.

I don't think that's what they're doing. A religious billboard is doing that. An atheist billboard is trying to get you to stop believing in what you believe in. It doesn't want you to ascribe those efforts to something else. It just wants you to stop. It isn't Pepsi saying Coke is stupid. It's a group of people who just want you to stop drinking alltogether.

Flying small planes
I've been flying since I was 4 years old (Grandfather was an fighter pilot and instructor, and other Grandfather was a test pilot). I fly small single engine planes to this day.
You must yell "CLEAR!" out the door before you start the engine, and if you're shuttling passengers I believe the only requirement is to help them exit the aircraft and get to the terminal safely. You would normally shut down your engine(s) if you were parked and done flying for the day, but if the pilot was just dropping off passengers, and was returning, or continuing on to another stop, he probably wasn't parked in a parking space, and in those cases, you just set your parking brakes and help the people to the terminal. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds, it seems like the pilot did everything he was supposed to do. I'd be interested to know if he was continuing his flight after the drop-off (which it sounds like he was), or if he was parked and just not shut down. I think that might make a difference in the case. Disclaimer: When I fly I never have people with me that are unfamiliar with small planes. If I have anyone with me at all, they are either licensed too, or know about small planes enough not to walk into the prop. Also I'm not a lawyer, these are just my thoughts on the matter. |
