The Japanese did the hologram with a live band thing a couple of years ago (and more since then, including a performance at an anime convention in LA) with Miku Hatsune -- a character created around the Vocaloid software. Vocaloid is basically a synthesizer that's based on a real life voice, but is digitized so one can create their own words and songs with it. It's gotten pretty big, and is actually pretty popular here in the US as well (Toyota did some commercials, that I've never seen on TV, that feature Miku).

She is claimed to be the first completely virtual "idol".
