Bath salts are a designer drug that has nothing to do with soaking in a tub. It’s a stimulant and hallucinogenic drug mixture popular in the United Kingdom and the United States that’s making its way into Canada.

The powerful synthetic drug can be snorted, smoked or injected. It’s cheap and easily found online, selling under a variety of brand names, including Vanilla Sky, Purple Wave, Meow Meow and Hurricane Charlie.

Two of the components of the drug — mephedrone and methylone — are amphetamines, and therefore already illegal.

My conspiracy theory friend is now convinced that the military "accidentally released a bio-weapon" and that's what causing all of these recent incidents. She keeps sending me stories, and I have to explain to her, "The Texas case happened three years ago. The MMA guy happened in 2010. This zombie virus is slower than those goddamned killer bees." Then that asshole in Maryland had to crop up, so there's no talking her out of it. This is what happens when a meme gets taken seriously. Oy.

The reason they're called 'bath salts' is because US analogue law says that controlled substance analogues are okay if they're not for human consumption. You market it as 'bath salts' or 'plant food' or 'room odorizer' or something similar, but we all know you're supposed to consume it.

Meph is a cathinone analogue, and cathinone is an amphetamine analogue.
But to be fair, ephedrine varies as much from methamphetamine as mephedrone does.
