A bit of history, In not preaching.
If your interested, here is a link to a history podcast about parents and child abuse. "Abuse" has been the norm in most of written (European) history. Our current social beliefs and protections of children is a new development "historically".

I came across this article and couldn't help thinking of this episodes title. The mother even says "I'm doing the best I can" to the police. She didn't hate her child but was still truly terrible, and if you read to the end they interview her and she misses her daughter.
Now I don't know how much of a bearing this story has on the argument on the show, as the woman is clearly not ok in the head. I warn you it's a pretty disturbing read. The girl in the window - Tampa Bay Times |
