People who think that religion is the only thing keeping them from going on murder sprees are terrifying. There is something wrong with them.

Humans develop ethics because we are social animals and cooperation with each other means survival. There is more Darwin there than some sky fairy.

Are we assuming that the money that goes into space research disappears if there is no space program? Can they not just fund research in general?

Also, I can't wait to hear Myq Kaplan's show!!

The Knights of Columbus are one of those "militarized" Christian groups, like the Salvation Army. They think they are fighting God's war. They are also the reason we say "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. They lobbied to have that phrase added in 1954.

The US government does. "...or about 35% of total spending on academic scientific research in the United States." So 65% of the total research dollars goes to research in general (whatever general means).

I would also say that a significant amount of space research helps terrestrial research (in general).

Thanks! I also can't wait! But have to a little bit longer, for the theme song.

Also, it seems to me that saying that we've benefitted tangentially from smaller computers or things that have been invented through the course of space exploration is like saying that porn is valuable because it's been on the forefront of improved DVD technology, faster internet, all that stuff as well. Not saying porn isn't valuable, just saying that's not usually at the heart of the argument of the merits of porn. What is, is porn's actual effects.

And one of the effects of spending money now on space, is that it's not being spent on preventing people in the human race from dying on earth, now. If we want the species to survive, how about we get water to everyone that we could? I understand it's not a lot of money compared to the military's budget, but THAT budget could be too big AND so could space's, no? Keep more earthlings alive NOW, get better education for everyone in place, and we'll have even more people to get on this space thing later, once no one is starving and dying unnecessarily. (Not that I understand all the implications of everything I'm saying, but it just seems weird to be caring about the human species of the future at the expense of the human species of the present... especially when space technology could also lead to some new weapon that would wipe us all out before we BECOME future us.)

And no one on earth would have come up with the insole?

space helps me feel connected. i like paralleling BIG occurrences with teensy ones. Like bubbles. Bubbles form spheres. It's efficient. Also using bubble logic, planets and stars. Jupiter has no land. It's a gas bubble. It coalesced like-midedly with the shiny baubles from my hello kitty soap wand.

and time! space is a community where things take billions and billions of years AND happen in instances. And from our wee perspective, how odd that galaxies that are flying through nothing at a gazillion miles and hour hurtling towards each other eating light and planets along the way from where we're sitting appear as a stand still. Human time seems so "right" to us, but it's our bodies capacity and not universal at all. shit, even Rock time and Tree time are different. space is cool. Keith you're 100% wrong on this one.
