The electoral college in each state vote for whomever wins the popular vote there. If the citizens refuse to vote, the electoral college will vote someone in office. It's really not. The electoral college aligns with the state's popular vote. If you just want to go with simple popular vote that's fine, but don't act like the electoral college goes wild card when it doesn't.

My bad. I'm Canadian so I miss stuff. Didn't the electoral college go wild when Bush 2 was elected in 2000? I thought they ignored some legal votes and counter others. How far off is that?

Things have changed of course because now non-landowners and women and whatnot are allowed to vote. what a shame?
