JFOD: a Modern Day Don Quixote. Brilliant. Love this guest. If only someone could harness John's stories and turn them into a movie script. It would be the greatest detective/ suspense/ thriller/ roots reggae/ documentary/ porno/ psychological thriller; of the modern era. It might even incorporate a new kind of 3D that utilizes dimensions that may or may not even exist.

Also, Chemda perceives that Mad Men show differently than most because she is a young, successful, female entrepreneur and the show is kind of a historical evolution of women in the corporate workplace. That or Jon Hamm is simply handsome and that red-head w/ the big tits is amazing.

This whole "movies/tv glorifying bad people" thing gets blown out of proportion. I liked Goodfellas and The Sopranos which supposedly glorified the gangster lifestyle but I never in a million years wanted to be a mafiosi. That shit seemed way too complicated and stressful.

Then again The Dark Knight and Iron Man definitely glorify superheroes and yet I never wanted to be one of them either. That also seems way too complicated and stressful.

I guess that's why my favourite tv/movie character is Floyd from True Romance.

I really think Chemda has the right idea about this. Mad Men is obviously like other shows in that it has multiple storylines and characters that you can choose to empathize with or not. Of course some viewers might think that it portrays the advertising agency in a way that is exciting and in a way glorified. However, that is up to each viewer's own interpretation, as most things in the show are shown objectively--they show the characters' positive and negative traits equally.

Mad Men is also a period piece and it's amazing how accurate everything is, every stitch of clothing, the hairstyles, the decor, the dialogue, etc. I was not alive in the 60s but my parents say that it is eerily accurate and a great representation of how much change occurred in one decade. It shows more than women's roles in the workplace-- it shows how everything was so different and people saw the world so differently. For example, the men are constantly drinking and smoking in the office, it is hard to imagine how they got any work done, but that is really how it was! It also shows how parenting was completely different than today, and how it affected the generation that grew up in that time.

The inaccuracies that were discussed on the show are few and far between. I see what Keith was saying about the pace being slow. Each episode can stand on its own, and so much happens in an episode it is more like a mini movie. I love this about the show--love the pacing and that they don't rush through storylines or try to tie loose ends together in a pretty bow by the end of a one hour episode. Overall it's so well done, I think everyone should watch at least one episode to see what it's about.

John and Chemda, are both right. They are just seeing it from different points of views. But tons of men out there wish they were John Hamm.

Forward Slash

Of course Chemda is right, "there is no front slash!"

There is a forward slash though - / is the forward slash or virgule

The biggest struggle for me in getting into Mad men was how much I disliked most of the characters. The stories were interesting, and I liked Peggy, but I found most everyone else despicable. I only started to warm up to characters when we got a look for who they were under all of the glamour, that most of them hated themselves. So I fell in love with the show around season 2 when I got to see characters I like doing their thing, and the characters that I hate start to look at themselves and possibly change. Hell, the most I've ever liked Don Draper was last season when he was close to what I recognize as a likable human being. I guess people can want to be these people, but I don't think the intention of the show is to glamorize them.

As for historical inaccuracies...I find the feel of the time period is more important than the specifics, especially since I'll probably never know the difference. The feel of privileged white people in the 60's is spot on, so I'll forgive quite a bit. Maybe this is an alternate timeline that is almost identical to our own, except for the occasional difference.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that do glorify these characters but I don't think the show does so I agree with Chemda. Don Draper is an awful person but you're rooting for him to 'see the light' so to speak. Same with a lot (most?) of other characters.

Hey I just ordered some Sherrie's Berries and put KATG in the little microphone thing at top and it said 'Welcome Keith and the Girl listeners' is the show still getting a kick back on these cuz I don't remember Keith or Chemda mentioning them on this or the last show...

I'm getting these berries either way, (they're a great Mother's day gift) but I'd feel better about it if the show got a few shekels as well.

Also, everyone hates their mom but Mother's Day is May 12th and you may as well order something sooner than later. There is no point in hating your mother AND paying a ton in last minute shipping.
