For perspective, the video for One was my 1st exposure to Metallica back when MTV actually played music videos. Which led to the real Headbanger's Ball on Saturday's nights. The show tended to skewer to more hard rock and metal unlike the "hair metal" played during the day so to me that became the measuring stick....and only why I lumped AC/DC in there. They never played em during the day so I never thought of them as just "rock"

Yeah MTV etc lump every band heavier than Michael Bolton into "Metal".

I class anything up to and including Sabbath and Dio into rock.

Dio and Sabbath are metal dude. If you throw them out you have to throw out every band that was ever originally called "heavy metal".

And I'll define metal however the fuck I want to. I choose to define it as "screaming vocals, fuck-all bass, and tearing thrashing guitars".

Yes, and that's the point. Hardly anything about Heavy Metal was heavy or metal. Just think, Van Halen was considered Heavy Metal too.
