OK.
I voted "no". Yep, huge surprise. In a nutshell - "IT'S JUST A WORD". Granted, like "blackface" and "nigger", certain words have historical connotations, and there are people who think that because my skin is white, I should not be allowed to use these words. I think that's racist, or at least skin-ist, because you're dictating how I behave based on the colour of my skin, but I digress... There are real problems in the world today. People are starving, homeless, abused. Fix these fucking problems, rather than generating fake outrage over something stupid like the name of a fucking sports team. When you strip away all the bullshit, life is about survival of the fittest. We (i.e. white people) conquered America (and Australia) and therefore we get to do whatever the fuck we want. The native Americans have very nicely worked the system (good on them for doing that) and the white guilt, and have thriving casinos and their own laws etc. This is an absolute joke and is the epitome of racism, as they only allow people of their race to join their special club; but they'll take our tax dollars with no problems. So when you stack free money from the government, casinos, cheap smokes, and their own fucking set of laws up against the name of a stupid football team, I say fucking keep the team name the same. If you strip away all the special treatment for the redskins, then maybe we can look at changing the name of the Redskins. Or not. It's just a name.

34:58 "We've been to Mars by the way, ask us ... it's red." The way Keith delivers "it's red" killed me so good I listened back four times.
Speaking of red ... DOESN'T EVERYBODY REALISE THERE'S A WAR ON?!?!? |

Also,
Ari: "Stop the gang rapes! You're becoming known as the gang rape country!" Chemda: "Oh ... is that what Gangnam Style is?" It doesn't really work written down, but listening to it I was all |

problems today? those starving, homeless, and abused people are often Native Americans. the suckholes we decided they could live are rife with alcoholism, meth abuse, and poverty. not sure where you got the idea they were all living high on the hog off our tax dollars, but that is not the case. considering all the daily subsidies, money, equipment, and weapons we hand over in the middle east to known terrorists, i think we /could/ do more throwing a few bones to the people whom we gave small pox blankets. i think 'special treatment' is warranted here. if we were better people we'd do more. for christ's sake we've had a holocaust museum for 20 years, but it has taken until the Obama administration to even give a terse apology to the Native Americans. shit, we officially apologized to the japanese when we interned them as soon as we let 'em out. it's not just a name. it's our really, really not giving a single fuck. it's gross. the farther we get from it, the more current bullshitteries take precedent, it's a human condition, but we've owed better more respectful treatment it to these people for hundreds of years. now's a good a time as any. history doesn't stop being real because more of it happened.

I dunno, I don't see why aboriginal people should be treated any different from any other race of people. It's not like the aboriginals were the only ones who suffered 'cause of another group of peoples. Should Greece be getting special treatment from Turkey 'cause Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul was settled by Greeks?
EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, it wouldn't surprise me if Greece is actually in debt to Turkey with how their economy is doing. |

yes. why care about the consequences of our actions? 'cause fuck it, right? they maybe shouldn't have showed us how to farm. we wouldn't have maybe stolen their children and raised them Mormon.
i don't much subscribe to a lot of 15th century imperial philosophies or 19th manifest destinies. i like to think we in the 21st are capable of treating others cultures with more respect. we intentionally destroyed a people and its identity to have the things we have; some of it we did just for fun. there are live people today who are experiencing hardship as a direct result. i think a little humility about it would be the least we could do. we'll never get to star trek the way we're going. I feel the fans' pain but the name has to go.
I went to the University of Illinois. I was in the marching band. I participated in the Chief Illiniwek tradition there.
I was upset at first when I heard people didn't like the halftime performance. But by the end I really didn't care, because (a) it was a two-minute performance during games that lasted hours, and (b) the teams were terrible anyway. That's not the sort of thing you cry over. We all love tradition, but tradition at the expense of people who have been and continue to be shit on worse than anyone else in this country's history kind of sucks. We can make new traditions. I live close enough to D.C. now that I have a lot of friends who are 'Skins fans and none of them are going to stop following the team if they change the logo or name. And for people who are just put out by the idea that something they like might be negatively affected by "political correctness" - well, if your local team name is more important than the dignity of 3-5 million of your fellow Americans then maybe your priorities are a little fucked up. Just sayin'. Last edited by spats; 11-12-2013 at 01:59 PM. |

I took the liberty of summarising the rest of your post. I think I captured its essence. I wouldn't care if someone made a sports team called "The Australian Convicts" even though my ancestors were uprooted from their I wouldn't care, because it didn't happen to me or to anyone I know. It's history, so who gives a fuck. I've got real problems today to fix, rather than baaawwwing about some shit that happened a million fucking years ago. And before you say that as a white man, I'm better off than my red or black skinned peers; I say if they're not doing well, then it's their own fucking fault. Yes, predjudice exists and life's not fair, but if someone's willing to fucking work at their shit, then a lot of shit is possible. |
